Kids playing with lighter sparked Joliet warehouse fire
By Admin on August 31, 2009
Joliet police say two 11-year-old girls playing with a cigarette lighter started a fire at a tire recycling facility that turned into an extra-alarm blaze Sunday night.
“It’s arson, but it’s more like kids playing with a lighter,” Cmdr. Mike Trafton said today. The fire at Tire Grinders Transporters at 175 S. Desplaines St. began around 7:30 p.m. and lasted nearly two hours.

Trafton said the facility, consisting of two buildings, “looks completely destroyed.” The girls, who live nearby, entered the facility.
“They were playing where they shouldn’t have been,” Trafton said.
The girls have been turned over to their parents, pending review by the Will County state’s attorney’s office, the commander said.

Group asks for enforcement of parental notice law
By Admin on August 31, 2009
CHICAGO — The Illinois Supreme Court is being asked to make sure regulators are holding doctors immediately accountable for notifying unmarried girls’ parents before performing an abortion.
The Chicago-based Thomas More Society filed a motion today on behalf of 10 plaintiffs, including parents of daughters.
The plaintiffs want the court to order the state to rescind a 90-day period for doctors to get up to speed on their obligations under the law, which took effect Aug. 4.
The Thomas More Society says doctors have had enough time. The law was enacted 14 years ago. Court challenges delayed it from being enforced.
Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation spokeswoman Susan Hofer says the agency is reviewing the motion.
