Woman killed in Kane County crash

By Admin on May 31, 2010

A 67-year-old woman was killed and another person injured in a two-vehicle crash in unincorporated Rutland Township near Huntley in Kane County this afternoon.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Illinois Route 47 and Big Timber Road at around 2 p.m., according to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2006 Chevrolet Impala was eastbound on Big Timber Road and entered the intersection of Route 47. A 2006 Chevrolet HHR was southbound on Route 47 and struck the driver’s side of the Impala, sheriff’s police said.

Based on the initial evidence at the scene it appears the HHR had the green light and the Impala failed to stop for the red light, police said.

Gloria Spadaro, 67, of Hickory Hills, who was driving the Impala, was pronounced dead on the scene. Rodrigo Cerna, 24, of Genoa, who was driving the HHR, was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The intersection was shut down until 5:30 p.m. for the investigation.

No citations had been issued and the accident was under investigation, according to police.

Wild turkey ruffling drivers’ feathers

By Admin on May 31, 2010

A wild turkey has been startling Lake Bluff residents by popping out of brush at a busy intersection.

The turkey, apparently camped out at Illinois Route 176 and Green Bay Road, has become something of a local attraction over the last few weeks.

“He walks around like he’s a king,” said Billy Duffy, 20, of Lake Bluff. “He walks through the streets. He’s a big guy.”

Police and village officials have been “inundated with calls” about the lone turkey, which is protected by federal wildlife laws, village police Chief Bill Gallagher said. He has contacted the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in search of solutions.

“I have been asked to put a ‘turkey ahead’ sign out there,” said Gallagher, sounding a bit ruffled as he explained why he declined the request. Most drivers are distracted and would overlook another sign, anyway, he said.

Duffy knows the bird well. He blames the gobbler for a car crash May 20 that totaled his 2006 Honda Pilot.

He was heading west on Route 176 when a driver who was turning right slammed on her brakes, apparently to avoid hitting the turkey. The car behind her stopped abruptly, and Duffy, in a third vehicle, rear-ended the second car.

Duffy said he wasn’t ticketed after witnesses described the incident to a sympathetic police officer, who was familiar with the bird.

“Immediately afterward the turkey just saunters up to the car in the middle,” said Duffy, who is carpooling and biking a lot these days.

“No hard feelings I guess. He is just a dumb turkey.”
