A Chicago police officer shot a motorist who pinned the officer’s partner to a fence with an SUV this afternoon, police said.
The man, whose identity was not being released, was critically injured in the shooting, which happened about 4:25 p.m. near Roosevelt Road and Sacramento Boulevard, authorities said.
His condition had been stabilized by early this evening, police said. The officer pinned against the fence received minor injuries, police said.

Officers responding to a call regarding a man with a gun near that intersection saw a grey Jeep leaving the area, according to a police press release.
The officers turned on their emergency lights and siren and curbed the Jeep at the mouth of an alley off Sacramento just north of Roosevelt, according to police.
When officers approached the SUV, the driver ignored their directions and accelerated the Jeep at one of them, pinning him against an iron fence, according to police.
“The second officer, fearing for his partner’s life, discharged his weapon and struck” the attacker, according to the police statement.
One man with critical injuries from a shooting was taken from the scene to Mt. Sinai Hospital, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight. The police statement, issued later, indicated that the attacker’s condition had been stabilized.
Officers from the Harrison District and the Police Department’s Mobile Strike Force were involved in responding to the attack, police said.
The Independent Police Review Authority had investigators on the scene, an official with the office said.
