Man charged with trying to kill cop with vehicle

By Admin on December 11, 2009

A 28-year-old West Side man is accused of hitting a Chicago police officer with his vehicle Wednesday night, shortly before the officer shot him.

Darnell Tolliver, 28, of the 5800 block of West Huron Street, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a controlled substance, police said this morning.

About 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, Grand-Central gang enforcement team officers were doing surveillance in the 6200 block of West Wabansia Avenue after getting information that drugs and weapons would be moved from that location, police said.

The officers then saw Tolliver get into a vehicle and drive away, police said. Officers tried to stop the vehicle near Wabansia and Moody Avenues, police said, but as the officers approached Tolliver, he accelerated his vehicle toward the officers, hitting one of them.

“As a result of this action, the officers discharged their weapons, striking the offender,” police had said in a statement.

An officer was taken to Resurrection Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.

The man shot by police was taken in critical condition to Loyola University Hospital in Maywood with multiple bullet wounds to his chest, officials said. An updated condition was unavailable for him this morning.

The Independent Police Review Authority said it was investigating the shooting.
