Teen dies after being shot on Sunday evening

By Admin on June 18, 2009

A 15-year-old Chicago boy was pronounced dead this morning after being shot in the head Sunday while he was playing basketball near his South Side home.

Abraham Tabani of the 4100 block of West 82nd Place was pronounced dead at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital, said a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Tabani had been a 10th grade student at Bogan High School, 3939 W. 79th St., said Monique Bond, a Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman. School let out for summer vacation on Friday, two days before the shooting.

With Tabani’s death there have been at least 36 Chicago Public School students killed this year. None of the students were killed in the schools.

Officials said Tabani had been playing basketball with his friends in a driveway on the same block as his home in the Ashburn neighborhood.

At about 11:40 p.m. Sunday a dark-colored vehicle was driven up and someone fired shots at Tabani and his friends, police said. The vehicle then fled westbound on 82nd Place. At the time police said the shooting seemed to be gang-related.
